Many Cultures, One Community (MCOC)

Who We Are

MAPS-MCOC is a social and educational program that promotes diversity through showcasing Islamic arts, history and cultures. Led by Dr. Rania Hussein, MAPS-MCOC provides workshops, classes and events to engage in the arts and showcase and share local talent.

We have 4 goals:

  1. Build an inclusive, diverse and collaborative community that appreciates cultural differences and promotes positive citizenry.
  2. Promote an appreciation of art, culture and history, and strengthen a sense of belonging, pride and identity in American Muslims, especially youth.
  3. Create opportunities for interaction and relationship-building in a social setting between Muslims and their neighbors, co-workers, colleagues and communities of diverse backgrounds.
  4. Enrich the American experience by highlighting the impactful contributions of Muslims in America.

What We Do

MAPS-MCOC hosts several initiatives throughout the year, some of which are highlighted below.

MAPS-MCOC Leader’s Role In Achieving Accommodation During Ramadan

In 2017, UW professors Dr. Rania Hussein and Dr. Bryan White started an initiative to offer the option of final exams at night (10:00-11:59pm) to accommodate their engineering and biology students fasting during Ramadan. This story received media attention and resulted in official adoption of a new policy at UW that mandated offering this accommodation to students every Ramadan.

Then on January 24, 2019, Dr White, Dr Hussein, and a few key UW students testified to the Senate Higher Education Committee regarding a bill supporting religious accommodation in post-secondary institutions. The bill was introduced by Senator Hasegawa and passed the Senate and had another public hearing on March 20 in the House College and Workforce Development Committee. Dr. Hussein testified as a UW faculty and as leader of MAPS-MCOC, having promoted this initiative with CAIR-WA in 2017. The live testimony can be viewed here.
